THOR 1616: increasing scrap density before sale
When the goal is not processing more material, but producing a better end product
Not every recycling operation is focused on increasing throughput.
For many recyclers, the priority is improving the quality of the material they already process. In these cases, success is measured not by the number of tonnes handled, but by the value of the final product.
That was the challenge facing a metal recycler in Louisiana, USA. After years of processing pre-shredded scrap, the company was looking for a way to further upgrade its material before sending it to market.
The answer was the THOR 1616 hammermill, a solution specifically designed to process pre-shredded feedstock and deliver a cleaner, denser and more consistent product.
Challenge: improve material quality before sale
In this project, the objective was not to increase the volume of material processed, but to improve the quality of the scrap before it was sold.
The customer was already processing pre-shredded material and needed an effective solution to densify, clean and homogenise the metallic fraction, reducing the presence of contaminants and facilitating its sale as a higher-value product.
Result: scrap that is denser, more uniform and more suitable for recycling
In this project, the objective was not to increase the volume of material processed, but to improve the quality of the scrap before it was sold.
The customer was already processing pre-shredded material and needed an effective solution to densify, clean and homogenise the metallic fraction, reducing the presence of contaminants and facilitating its sale as a higher-value product.
Solution: shredding with the THOR 1616
To meet this requirement, ZB supplied a THOR 1616 mobile hammermill shredder, designed to process previously prepared material and deliver more consistent shredding.
The machine transforms pre-processed scrap into a denser, cleaner and more homogeneous material, improving its preparation for downstream processes such as separation, recovery and final sorting.

Built Around a Specific Objective
The recycling industry offers plenty of solutions aimed at high-volume processing. However, not every operation requires a large shredding installation. Many recyclers simply need a cost-effective way to improve material quality and increase its market value.
The THOR 1616 was developed with exactly that purpose in mind.
Its configuration allows efficient processing of pre-shredded material, improving metal liberation and enhancing downstream recovery processes. The result is a cleaner and more homogeneous product that is better suited to market requirements.
This project also highlights an important reality within the recycling industry: profitability is not only driven by production volume. The quality of the final product plays an equally important role.
The success of this installation in Louisiana reflects a growing trend across the sector: upgrading already processed scrap can be just as valuable as increasing overall throughput.
